We had a giggle at this tweet below and thought you would too. Not all DIY burglar alarms are quite so obvious, but are they sweet enough? We look at the pros and cons of DIY home security…

Fake alarm box

Pro:

– Cheap

Cons:

– Robbers know the fake makes

– Degrade quickly due to low quality materials

– You need the right tools and ladder to install

– Batteries need changing regularly

Worth it?

– No. You might as well keep the chocolate box! At least you get to eat them and use the box for biscuits or sewing supplies afterwards!

Wired DIY burglar alarm kit

Pro:

– Cheaper than a professional

Cons:

– Two words: mains electricity!

– You need the right tools and ladder to install

– Cables need careful placement in walls or under floors

– Incorrect fitting or setting leads to false alarms and upset neighbours

– Upset neighbours lead to complaints so you stop setting it. You’re back at square one.

Worth it?

– No. Why risk an electric shock and re-decorating bill?!

Wireless DIY burglar alarm

Pro:

– Cheaper than a professionally installed alarm

Cons:

– You need the right tools and ladder to install

– Incorrect fitting or setting leads to false alarms and upset neighbours

– Upset neighbours leads to complaints so you stop setting it. You’re back at square one.

– You need to know what happens to your security if your internet or electricity goes down

– You need to know how to protect it from hackers and signal jammers

Worth it?

– No. Some are actually more expensive than a professional installer. Why pay more and do the work yourself for less protection?!
